Flip flops have been one of the trendiest item in the past two years, thanks to the sudden emergence of Havaianas and Ipanema. From a simple footwear that you can buy on sale in a big tray outside the store for a dollar or more, flip flops have achieved a certain degree of fashionable status, since fashion magazines started to rave about the coolness of the footwear, and fashion designers also said yes through launching different shoe and slipper designs styled in the structure of flip flops. What is surprising is that even in men’s fashion, flip flops also became so cool. In men’s footwear, there is a predominance of slip-ons, closed shoes, and peeping toes, and flip flop designed footwear by confidently teaching men that showing some foot skin is nice and fashionable somehow defied such predominance.
While flip flops continue to be trendy, men should never, ever, try to wear plastic or rubber flip flops to create a casual ensemble. Your Havaianas belong to street wear and beach wear, and that’s it. Unless you’re a gorgeous tall hunky model who won’t be needing to dress good to be noticed anyway, resist the urge of wearing rubber or plastic flip flops as a substitute to loafers or oxfords. Leather sandals are bold enough, and leather slippers bolder. While there are men who can pull off wearing slippers in the office, they no doubt are just a lucky few, and don’t be confident to think that you’re one of them. If you will wear Havaianas with your khakis and button-down shirt, even you carry such care free attitude in you, it will really still be a complete fashion disaster.
